Programs:          ✅ Ascend          ⛔ Catalyze          ⛔ Elevate

A first-generation college student is generally someone whose parents or guardians did not attend college or a university. In the Ascend survey, students are asked the highest level of education completed by any parent or guardian. Participants are considered “first-generation” in Ascend reports if they indicate that the highest level of education completed by any parent or guardian is a high school diploma/G.E.D. or less. Participants are considered “continuing generation” if they indicate that any parent or guardian attended college or completed a degree.

Participants who select “Other,” “I’m not sure,” “Prefer not to answer,” or skip the question are categorized as “skipped question” in reports.

Specifically, participants are asked the following question.
